Local Birding

Peoria Lock & Dam

Area closed for security reasons since September 11, 2001
Directions From East Peoria, take Route 116 south through Creve Coeur. Turn west on Wesley Road (just past the McDonald's in North Pekin). Follow Wesley Road to the dam entrance.
Description The public access area at the lock and dam is a good winter birding spot for unusual gulls as well as Bald Eagles. Because the water remains open throughout the winter, gulls and eagles congregate. Thayer's, Glaucous, Iceland, Greater and Lesser Black-backed gulls, and Black-legged Kittiwake (once) have been reported in years past.
Suggested Route/Stops The public access area near the parking lot provides a flat surface for scoping activity at the locks. There is no access from the Peoria side of the river.
Commonly Seen Birds Winter -- Bald Eagles. Large numbers of gulls -- including some rarer species.
