Examples of the Outstanding Books for Sale

The family of the late Louise Augustine, an avid local birder with a life list of over 5000 species, has generously donated all her bird books to the Peoria Audubon Society.  The family specified that proceeds from the sale will go to the Peoria Audubon Bird Sanctuary Fund.  We intend to offer up to ten books here on our website for sale to anyone reading our listing.  All books are in excellent conditions, and prices have been established to be competitive with those given at Amazon.com for used books.

Books for Sale:

  1. The Audubon Society Encyclopedia of North American Birds, by John K. Terres. A must-have book for any serious birders, no longer available new. Original price was $75.00. As good as new.  Our price is $40.00.

  2. Birds of the World: A Checklist, Fifth Edition, by James F. Clements. Another must-have book for world birders. This edition includes all known subspecies by name and distribution. New price is $60.00. Can be had for $30.00.

  3. A World Checklist of Birds, by Burt Monroe and Charles Sibley. A competitive volume to the list given above by Clements. No subspecies listed. New price is $34.00. Available for $ 17.00.

  4. The Birder’s Catalogue: The Sourcebook for Birding Paraphernalia, by Sheila Bluff. Has chapters on Watching the Birds, Backyard Birding, Information and Sources, Art for Bird Lovers, Birding Hotspots, and Getting Serious. New price was $12.00, our price $6.00.

  5. Kingbird Highway, by Kenn Kaufman. A must-read book. Kaufman decided as a young boy to forsake college and go on a one-year birding trip through the USA to beat the year-record of species sighted. This is the same Kaufman who now is one of the best authors of birds in the US. Brand new book. New price is $23.00, our price is $12.00. SOLD

  6. Birds in Jeopardy, by Paul Ehrlich, David Dobkin, and Darryl Wheye. An excellent description of the problems birds face with the increasing human population. Amazon price is $10.00, ours is $5.00.

  7. Nature through Tropical Windows, by Alexander F. Skutch. The author describes his 40-year experience living in tropical forests. An excellent read. New price $28.00. Ours is $10.00.SOLD

  8. Birds of Tropical America, by Steven Hilty. This book picks up where field guides leave off. Author Hilty is well known for his Field Guide on the Birds of Columbia. Only $7.00.SOLD

  9. To See Every Bird on Earth, by Dan Koeppel. This book describes the life of the author’s father Richard in his quest to see as many birds as possible, He got more than 7,000 on his life list. An excellent read. New price is $14.00, ours is $7.00. SOLD

  10. The Bird Lover’s Journal: An Illustrated Journal with Space for Notes. A good stocking stuffer or birthday gift. New $10.00, our price is $5.00.

Maury will be bringing about half of the books to the September 10 Audubon Meeting for sale.  He will bring the following categories of books to the September meeting: (1) General Birding; (2) Birding in the Americas and Hawaii; (3) Birding in Australia, New Zealand, and New Guinea

At the October 8 meeting, Maury will be bringing the remainder of the books from (1) Africa and (2) Asia to the Peoria Audubon membership meeting

100% of the funds from this sale will go to the Peoria Audubon Society Sanctuary Fund to establish a bird sanctuary near Peoria.
